Tomorrow another taxi cab limousine.

In 2007, City officials convened a group of stakeholders, including representatives of taxi drivers, owner and passengers, to create a set of goals for the next New York City taxi cab, a project called the Taxi of Tomorrow. In December 2009, the TLC issued a "request for proposals," inviting auto manufacturers and designers to submit their best ideas for a purpose-built vehicle to serve as a New York City taxicab. Whichever of these designs that the City selects, if any, will be the next New York City taxicab (subject to constant improvements and enhancements) for the next ten years. Disabilities, Taxi cab transport

Chevrolet Taxi Cab

Chevrolet Taxi Cab Boosts New Yorkers Mobility
General Motors Corp. is unleashing a new taxi fleet service to transport persons with mobility-restricting disabilities or spinal cord injuries. The introduction will coincide with the celebration of 100 years of taxi cabs in New York City. The first wheelchair-accessible cab approved for taxi use will make its public debut at the 2007 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS).

“General Motors is dedicated to making automotive transportation easier and more accessible for the millions of persons with disabilities,” said John Gaydash, the director of marketing for GM Fleet and Commercial Operations. “With the debut of our new lowered-floor van for taxicabs, we are giving New Yorkers with disabilities a key element in maintaining independence – mobility.”

The Chevrolet Uplander TC was upgraded by El Dorado National, GM’s approved upfitter, to make pass the taxi cab standard. The cab features a stainless steel floor that is 12 inches lower than the conventional. It also offers a full 58 inches of interior height without a raised roof.

“By lowering the floor instead of raising the roof we increase accessibility and keep the center of gravity low, which improves the safety of the vehicle,” said Gaydash. “This creates nearly five feet of height in the rear passenger compartment, allowing both able and less able passengers to enter and exit with ease.”

Wheelchair cab in Thailand

Metro king, First domestically made wheelchair accessible taxi.

A new company called MetroKing has sprung up that hopes to manufacturing cabs in America just as former taxi maker Checker has filed for bankruptcy. Starting with the underpinnings from a two-wheel drive Chevrolet Colorado Chassis Cab Work Truck, MetroKing replaces the pickup bed with a passenger compartment of its own design that features room for six occupants. The company points out that their design is fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, being wheelchair accessible through a unique side access ramp. Interestingly, luggage rides alongside the driver on a dedicated tray, there is no passenger seating next to the driver. Thankfully, air conditioning is standard for the passenger compartment.

Wheelchair taxi, aangepast vervoer.

Minimodal Taxi for wheelchair users

The Minimodal is a taxi design concept designed specifically for the city of new york. The vehicle features a very unusual design that is small and light and uses a hybrid-power system. The two-person passenger cab is low to the ground and features side windows and a fully open skylight. The driver sits in front of an all glass front end and on top of the hybrid engine. The car would also have a signaling system that would let other drivers know when a passenger was coming out to avoid collisions. The designers at hybrid product design also envisioned two larger versions of the taxi to accommodate more passengers. The Maximodal would seat 3 and a wheelchair and the Mogulmodal would seat four plus a wheelchair.

Future handicap taxi.

Design by Damian Lucaciu / Uni Cab.
Former Student of RMIT.

During the last 10 years I've seen lots of future designs for new Wheelchair Cabs. Designs like the future taxi in the picture here. Always small cars running on an environmental friendly kind of energy. Never  were these cars accessible for disabled or adapted to wheelchairs. This is the first wheelchair accessible taxi design. And what a design. I love it. A very ingenious multi purpose vehicle running on a hydrogen fuel cell.

It can transport up to 4 people at once or one disabled person and his companion. It has ramp access and some luggage space. For more pictures see this website.

Now I just have to wait for this taxi to become available in Bangkok or even better Hua Hin, Thailand.
